Zener cards: the ESP test that did not survive its own controls

Five symbols, twenty-five cards, and the most famous experiment in parapsychology. What Rhine found at Duke, what was wrong with how he found it, and how to score the test properly.


A circle, a cross, three wavy lines, a square, a five-pointed star. Twenty-five cards, five of each. If you have seen a film in which someone is tested for psychic ability, you have seen this deck.

Where they came from

The cards were designed in the early 1930s by Karl Zener, a perceptual psychologist at Duke University, for use by his colleague J. B. Rhine. Rhine wanted to bring the study of what he called extrasensory perception into a laboratory, and that required a stimulus set with a known, fixed probability. Five equally likely symbols gave him exactly that: guess at random across twenty-five cards and you expect five hits. Any consistent excess over five needed explaining.

The symbols were chosen to be simple, easily distinguished, and — importantly — easy to hold in mind as a mental image. Rhine published his results in Extra-Sensory Perception in 1934, reporting participants scoring well above five, some of them dramatically so. The book was a genuine sensation, and it is largely why the phrase “ESP” entered ordinary English.

What went wrong

The results did not survive scrutiny. The recurring problems:

  • Sensory leakage. The early cards were printed on stock thin enough that the symbol could be made out from the back under the right light. In some sessions the experimenter could see the card and sat facing the participant. Neither requires anyone to cheat — a glance, a pause, a change in breathing is enough.
  • Inadequate randomisation. Hand-shuffling a 25-card deck does not produce independent draws, and participants can learn its regularities without knowing they have. Because each symbol appears exactly five times, a participant who tracks what has already come up can beat five hits by counting rather than by anything else.
  • Optional stopping. If a run may be ended when the results look good and continued when they do not, an ordinary chance process will produce a publishable excess. This is the single most powerful way to manufacture a positive result, and it requires no dishonesty at all — only enthusiasm.
  • Selective reporting. Sessions that produced nothing were sometimes attributed to poor conditions or an uncooperative participant and set aside. Once failures can be explained away, no result can count as evidence.

As controls tightened — sealed opaque cards, machine randomisation, the experimenter separated from the participant, run lengths fixed in advance — the effect shrank toward the chance line and stayed there. That pattern, where an effect is inversely proportional to the rigour used to look for it, is the characteristic signature of no effect.

How to score it honestly

The arithmetic is not complicated and it is the interesting part. Guessing at twenty draws with five equally likely symbols is a binomial process with n = 20 and p = 0.2. Expected score: 4.

  • Six or more happens by chance to roughly one guesser in five.
  • Seven or more, about one in twelve.
  • Nine or more, about one in a hundred.
  • Twelve or more, about one in ten thousand.

The one-in-a-hundred figure is the one worth sitting with. It sounds remarkable, and it is exactly what you should expect to see repeatedly once a hundred people have played. A result that would be striking in a single carefully designed experiment is unremarkable when thousands of people are generating results and only the strange ones get shared. This is the same reason someone wins the lottery every week and it means nothing about them.

Our version uses twenty draws rather than the traditional twenty-five, and — because it draws each card independently rather than dealing a fixed deck — you cannot improve your score by tracking what has already appeared. The card is fixed by the software before you choose and is never altered afterwards. Your score is reported against the chance baseline, not graded on a curve that flatters you.

Why play it at all

Because it is fun to watch your own certainty come apart. Almost everyone gets a run of three or four that feels like something, and watching the average drift back to four teaches the point better than any explanation. It is a good test. It just does not measure what it was built to measure.
